The Future of Work Is Managing AI

Enterprise AI frees employees from time-consuming tasks — but the productivity gain comes with a new responsibility.

ZURICH, Switzerland – September 2026 – There is no free lunch — not even with Enterprise AI. While artificial intelligence can eliminate hours of searching, researching, waiting, coordinating, and repetitive work, BlueCallom’s experience with Enterprise Workflow Intelligence shows that this creates an entirely new challenge: humans must increasingly manage the work performed by AI.

Across enterprise workflows, countless small activities that once consumed minutes or hours can now be completed within seconds. Information can flow across departmental and system boundaries almost instantly. Research can be conducted while employees work on something else. Exceptions can be identified, actions proposed, and entire workflow steps prepared autonomously.

BlueCallom has found that Enterprise Workflow Intelligence can free more than 25% of employee working time almost immediately, with significantly higher gains possible as AI utilization increases.

But that does not make employees obsolete.

It makes their time more valuable.

As AI performs more operational work, employees increasingly review results, evaluate alternatives, provide direction, make decisions, handle exceptions, and ensure that AI activity remains aligned with business goals.

“The Future of Work is not humans working faster. It is humans managing increasingly capable AI. That future is already beginning now,” says Axel Schultze, CEO of BlueCallom. “AI can execute hundreds of actions while we perform one. Our responsibility is to ensure that those actions make sense — and use the time we gain for what AI cannot replace: intuition, empathy, creativity, relationships, and human judgment.”

BlueCallom calls this shift AI Utilization. Instead of measuring success by how often employees use a chatbot or copilot, enterprises can increasingly utilize AI continuously across entire workflows. Employees operate within those intelligent workflows, overseeing AI-generated research, proposals, decisions, documents, communications, and actions.

This also changes the traditional meaning of management. Managing AI does not carry the social and leadership responsibilities of managing people, but it requires employees to set expectations, assess outcomes, intervene when necessary, and take responsibility for results.

And employees who have never considered themselves managers may not be left behind: AI itself can help guide them through that new responsibility.

The Future of Work therefore may not be a workplace with fewer humans. It may be a workplace where every human has vastly more capacity.
