Build or Buy Your Enterprise AI
Build or Buy AI History
In the past four years, companies have built their own enterprise-level AI solutions. They hired dozens of engineers and Python programmers to build agents or program around Copilot solutions that help employees reduce their daily workload. Every consultant suggested building your own, or they build it for you. The reason was simple: No enterprise AI Application suite existed on the horizon.
The Enterprise AI Development Learning Curve
While everyone built their own version and variation, we first built a universally usable platform that lets companies measure, manage, and scale their implementation. With every project, we learned new things, received different requirements, and had lots of new ideas on how to build a better platform. Scaling was one of the biggest challenges. Another huge challenge was convincing customers not to push us to go with Python-based coding. We had to reject projects and partnerships. We believed in Native-AI applications. The entire application layer consists of prompt-like AI units that collaborate directly with the LLM and don’t fall back on rigid, deterministic coding. Not only are the results far more intelligent, but rapid development also had a completely new dimension.
What’s involved now changes the question
Today, as companies move from experimentation toward mission-critical Enterprise AI, the requirements have changed. That also changed the question:
- How much effort will you put into developing your own infrastructure, platform, database design, communication architecture, and agent-to-agent and application-to-application communication?
- When will you be ready to move from desktop AI to Enterprise AI?
- Can internal teams build and continuously advance an Enterprise AI platform for thousands of employees?
- Can they develop potentially hundreds of applications and Agents, integrate them with each other and existing enterprise systems?
- Will governance, compliance, measurability, productivity, security, and scalability be at the top level of the industry?
- And keep pace with rapidly advancing AI technology?
What CEOs told us:
“We started like everybody else with bots, copilots, and Agents. Nothing wrong with that decision, but there is no way to make it mission-critical.”
Another pointed to the consequences of decentralized experimentation: “Our teams were allowed to use bots, and now we have an estimated 5,000 prompts ghosting around. Now we are rethinking the future of AI.”
And yet another: “What started as an application-building challenge is increasingly becoming an architecture challenge.”
Enterprise AI Is Becoming an Architecture Challenge
Building an individual AI application has become significantly easier. Building an Enterprise AI ecosystem has become dramatically more complex – not because of the AI but because of the sheer size and speed.
Once thousands of intelligent AI units, partly acting autonomously, others asynchronously, and yet others in parallel work 24 x 7 x 365, for hundreds or thusands of employees at the same time, an orchestrator and copilots or agents won’t make it.
Mission-critical Enterprise AI requires more than models and Agents. Applications need to work across departments and existing systems. Enterprises need security, governance, AI Asset Management, organizational access, analytics, productivity measurement, interoperability, and mechanisms for protecting the intelligence created by AI. And unlike conventional enterprise software, the underlying technology continues to advance at extraordinary speed.
BlueCallom’s AgenticBlue Enterprise AI platform provides the common technological foundation, while Enterprise Workflow Intelligence enables intelligent workflows to operate across employees, departments, applications, data sources and existing enterprise systems. Instead of forcing companies to adapt their business to standardized AI software, companies can design applications around their own workflows, knowledge, processes, and desired business outcomes. A logistics company requires fundamentally different intelligence than a manufacturer, bank, or professional services organization. Even two companies in the same industry operate differently enough that their most valuable AI applications should not be identical.
Intelligence Protection
Enterprise AI also changes what enterprises need to protect. For decades, companies primarily protected data and software. With Enterprise AI, there is a new asset to protect: the intelligence itself. BlueCallom therefore integrates Intelligence Protection into its Enterprise AI architecture. Applications and Agents can make their capabilities broadly available without unnecessarily exposing the underlying prompts, business logic or proprietary intelligence structures. The objective is to allow enterprises to scale the use of intelligence while protecting the intelligence itself.
Next Generation Workflow Intelligence is Around The Corner
Today, most enterprise AI applications still follow the specialization model, like an application for sales, one for supply chain management, one for logistics, HR, and so forth. But that is the trap disruptive technologies lay out over and over again. But the next-generation Enterprise Workflow Intelligence will be different. Everything is completely networked. Users can access what they are allowed to access. That could include a product library, a user-specific price list, the customers they are responsible for, a report about average delivery time, and insights into the next possible shipment from a key vendor. The old silos will get translucent where it’s helpful and can still be protected where necessary.
